Mb-2 Maple 34" Fretless Bass #651 (used)
Mb-2 Maple #651. This is a very clean and lightly used Mb-2 from 2007. It features a semi-hollow swamp ash body, and a really nice western curly maple top. Over the years, the oil finish on the body has darkened a bit, giving it a nice warm glow. The binding is made from celluloid nitrate, and has a very fine grain pattern to it (if you look closely).
The 34” scale neck is made from eastern rock maple, with subtle markings of both birdseye figure and some light flame pattern. To me this is just the right amount, as it gives the wood great character, while being understated. While it seems like a small detail, I have found over the years of listening to many basses, the unlined fingerboards have a touch more sustain and punch, due to the fact that they do not have the fret slots cut…providing a purely solid fingerboard. This fingerboard is made from cocobolo, a very resonant wood that has great sustain, and a bit of compression too, as the resins/oils in the wood soften the high frequencies. This also combines well with the punchy quality of the ash body, giving and overall warm yet assertive tone. The bridge is also made from cocobolo.
Overall condition is very good, with a few minor spots of playing wear (as you can imagine for a bass of this vintage), and the bass has had a full service, including truing the fingerboard, a full setup, new La Bella 760n strings, and a new Fishman Matrix pickup element.
It comes with a new Access Stage 3 gig bag.
